The Work

Most DUCK Expeditions fall into the three broad categories of children, animals or construction. However, since Sri Lanka is new this year we’re looking to switch things up a bit and combine working with children and animals in the same trip. During the first part of the expedition we will be working with Ocean Stars Trust in a school in Batticaloa that supports disadvantaged children and families affected by the 2004 tsunami. The volunteer work will involve basic maintenance work at the school such as painting, teaching classes such as music, drama and sports and playing games with the children at break time. The second part of the trip will last about a week and will involve working alongside Travelteer carrying out work focused on wildlife conservation and habitat protection. By combining volunteer work with children and with animals this trip will provide an opportunity for volunteers to experience two different forms of volunteer work whilst continuing to have a distinctly positive impact.

Travel Opportunities

The travel portion of the Sri Lanka expedition will be two and three weeks long. With this more extended time frame we will hopefully be able to get a better understanding of Sri Lanka’s cultural and natural heritage. Key hot spots on the list include Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Kandy and Uda Walawe National Park. Because Sri Lanka is so easy to move around, we’re hoping to be able to get a good grasp of the country as a whole whilst savouring its immense diversity.

2019 leader: Zack Emmett

Hi! I’m Zack I’m a second year studying Philosophy and Psychology and I’m this years Sri Lanka Expedition leader. Last summer I went on the Costa Rica Expedition and having had such a great time, I decided to apply to lead a trip of my own. I’m enormously excited to lead this new expedition and hope to lead a successful trip and establish good relations with our partner charities so that this trip can continue every year!
