The DUCK Local Charities Fund was established by the Durham University Charities Committee to fund specific projects which benefit the local community. Whilst students are a transient population within the city, they seek to create a legacy through the Local Charities Fund, to benefit local people and places by funding specific projects.
Applications that specify how money will be spent to support specific goals are encouraged. We want to hear how this will be spent to support a specific project or goal e.g. to pay six months’ rent for an art group, to pay for a new piece of equipment in a hospice, to fund a ‘sports day’ for a youth group. However, we understand that it is not always possible to be this specific, and we encourage charities to use our fund in whichever way will best fulfil their needs. This year we are prioritising groups that support young people and have shown resilience and the ability to innovate in the face of a changing funding environment.
Typically, the DUCK Local Charity Fund distributes grants of between £100 and £1000; although applications outside of this bracket are considered, please do not request sums which far exceed £1000.
This is a fund for Local Charities and Groups, where‘Local’ is defined as those operating in County Durham and Teeside, and whose work impacts the local community. This is part of DUCK’s commitment to the local community. For this reason, applications cannot be accepted from international charities, even if they are based locally (a charity based in Newcastle, working in Africa, would not be eligible). However, applications from local branches of national charities (for example, ‘Durham and Chester le Street Mind’) can be accepted. This year we are prioritising groups working in Durham City and can show they work with disadvantaged groups from within the city or across the county.
The fund will be open for applications 1st March - 30th April 2019
The DUCK panel will meet to agree awards in June 2019
Successful groups will be notified in July 2019

Donate to the LCF
This year, we are making it even easier to donate to the LCF through the new fundraising app, Percent.
Download the app, link your. card (as you would with Deliveroo or Uber) and spend as normal. Most importantly, remember to add DUCK as your cause. Retailers will donate a percentage of your bill to your cause. DUCK promises that all donations will contribute to the LCF.
It’s that simple!
