Once a week Durham FoodCycle collects surplus food - including food which has pass its use by date and would otherwise be discarded - from shops, greengrocers, bakers and supermarkets in Durham City Centre. With this food, their volunteers cook up a nutritious three course meal in a vacant kitchen space. They invite homeless people, people in food poverty and/or social isolation to come and eat this meal with them and have a chat.
Durham FoodCycle aims to reduce: food wastage, social isolation and food poverty. By the end of the year they aim to have expanded to a second base within in County Durham, where poverty is much more rife. Last year, DUCK Allocations donated £1,000 to Durham Foodcycle to help it with its planned expansion.
