Cambodia

Approximate dates:  Mid August to Mid September
Number of places: 15
2017 Expedition Leader: Ellen Todd (ellen.l.todd@durhamac.uk)
Application deadline: Friday 11th November 5pm

Next summer, DUCK will send 15 students off to Cambodia for the journey of a lifetime! Are you ready for the challenge? The team will spend 6 weeks volunteering and travelling this beautiful country in the heart of Southeast Asia.

The expedition will focus on a 4 week volunteering project with Globalteer and Burma Education Project. The project will consist of construction and renovation work each morning and childcare every evening. Working with these children who speak little to no English is challenging but so rewarding! Using games, lessons, sports, arts and music you will find all sorts of ways to interact with these amazing children and make the experience life changing, not only for them but for you too! The expedition will inspire an attitude in you that you will carry for the rest of your life; a love of teaching, a love for charity work, or a love of Cambodia - it is an experience you’ll never forget.

The rest of the time in Cambodia will be spent travelling and touring the marvellous country. When we arrive we will fly to Siem Reap and spend the first few days exploring the world famous temples, including the Angkor Wat, which are all steeped in history and jaw dropping to wander through. After completing the project work we will travel to the south of the country to the beautiful beaches of Sihanoukville. Picture white sandy beaches, blue oceans and skies, scuba diving, snorkelling and watching the sunsets from a tropical island! After this we move to Kampot, a quaint and quirky little town where we visit hidden waterfalls and trek through the jungle. Finally off to Phnom Penh, the capital city, where we discover the Royal Palace, the Killing Fields and the bustling markets! This is not an opportunity to be missed!

About the leader

Hiya, I’m Ellen and I’m in my second year at Cuth’s studying Psychology and Anthropology. I loved the Thailand expedition last year and knew at the end of it that I wanted to do another DUCK expedition this summer. I am so excited to be leading the expedition to Cambodia this year; it is such an amazing opportunity to get involved with! I cannot recommend DUCK expeditions enough; if you apply it will be the best and most rewarding thing you do this summer.

We will be volunteering for 4 weeks out in Siem Reap, teaching children English, Math and arts and crafts, as well as leading sports activities. The projects aim is to provide these vulnerable children with better education, nutrition and economic opportunity, it is so important in helping to give these children their childhood back. After the project we will be spending a week relaxing and exploring all that Cambodia has to offer.
