Leaving first thing on Monday, we finally we arrived in Siem Reap on Tuesday morning, tired from our travels but excited as we rode tuk tuks past the bustling markets to our hostels. Wednesday marked our first full day and we set off to explore the ancient temples of Angkor north of the city. The temples, built between the 10th and 14th century, are now covered in overgrown jungle vegetation, but offer a glimpse into the centre of the once great Khmer empire and, with a little imagination, a glimpse into the worlds of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones which were filmed in the area.
Although our project has not yet started, we feel we have learnt much about Cambodian life and Khmer culture. Everyone here has been incredibly friendly and keen to show off Cambodian food, drink, architecture and entertainment. Our haggling skills have improved significantly after spending time in the markets in an attempt to fill our suitcases with presents (for friends and family, honestly!) and blend in wearing traditional Cambodian dress. We look forward to spending the rest of the week exploring Siem Reap and the temples; and we are excited to be in Battambang on Saturday!
